Sounders 2017 MLS schedule released
Just over three weeks ago, MLS announced the first three weeks of the 2017 schedule. On Thursday, the league released the rest of the schedule. As a reminder, the Sounders begin the season on the road with games against the Houston Dynamo and the Montreal Impact before opening the season at home on Sunday, March 19th against the New York Red Bulls.
Let's take a look at rest of the schedule.
The Sounders will get their first look at 2017 expansion side Atlanta United FC. That game will be on Friday night, March 31st and televised on FOX Sports 1 (FS1). Seattle will then hit the road for three straight road games against San Jose Earthquakes (4/8), Vancouver Whitecaps (Friday, 4/17) and the LA Galaxy (Sunday, 4/23).
They return home for a brief two-game home stand against the New England Revolution (4/29) and a 2016 MLS Cup Final rematch against Toronto FC (5/6) before taking the road for a two-game swing. Those games will be against Chicago Fire (5/13) and Sporting Kansas City (Wednesday, 5/17).
Real Salt Lake comes to town on May 20th and we will see the Portland Timbers for the first time on May 27th, Memorial Day Weekend. The Sounders will then have to travel across country for a mid-week game against the Columbus Crew (Wednesday, 5/31).
After a brief cross country trip, the Sounders welcome the Dynamo (Sunday, 6/4). The Sounders will have a week off before heading back on the road for a game at Yankee Stadium against New York City FC (6/17). The Sounders return home to play Orlando City SC on yet another mid-week game on Wednesday, 6/21).
Seattle will make their first trip to Portland on Sunday, June 25th and then head to Commerce City, CO to take on the Colorado Rapids on Tuesday, July 4th in a Western Conference Final rematch. After 15 days, off due to CONCACAF Gold Cup stage matches, the Sounders will host D.C. United (Wednesday, 7/19) and San Jose (Sunday, 7/23).
The Sounders will visit the Galaxy for the second time on July 29th and then play their first-ever match against Minnesota United FC a week later on August 5th. Sporting KC will come back to CenturyLink Field for the first time since the Western Conference Knockout Round game on August 12th and the Sounders will then welcome Minnesota to Seattle eight days later on Sunday, August 20th).
Just three days later, the Sounders hit the road to take on Vancouver for the second time this season on Wednesday, August 23rd. Just four days later, Portland comes back to town on August 27th to finish up the three-game series. One week later, the Galaxy come to town for their only visit in 2017 on Sunday, September 10th.
Seattle will embark on a brief two-game road trip when they head to Frisco, TX to take on FC Dallas (9/16) and Real Salt Lake (9/23).
Of the final four regular season games, three of them will be played at home. The first being yet another mid-week game against Vancouver (Wednesday, 9/27). The Sounders will take their final road trip of the season to Chester, PA to take on the Philadelphia Union (Sunday, 10/1).
Seattle will finish with a two-game home stand against FC Dallas (10/15) and the Rapids (10/22).
There will be 14 matches played on Saturday, seven mid-week games (six on Wednesday, one on Tuesday, 7/4). Two games are being played on a Friday night and the other 11 matches are being played on Sundays.
Not a lot of opportunity for away day travel to Vancouver outside of the Friday, April 14th game. The other away game is during the week. The Portland game being on Memorial Day Weekend is a bit of a bummer as a lot of people usually leave town.
There will also be some US Open Cup games sprinkled in and those will be mid-week as well. No word on what the situation is regarding CONCACAF Champions League as they may wait until next year to kick off the next session.
Start planning your away travel!
